All sorts of interesting mobile business are popping up! Maybe it’s the recession that is pushing entreprenures to chose more creative outlets for vending, educating, and feeding the masses. Businesses can reach new people in unique locations when they are on wheels.
On Sunday at the SoWa Open Market there was a new truck on the quad and it wasn’t selling cupcakes or grilled cheese — it was selling clothing! The Fashion Truck is a boutique on wheels. You REALLY have to be “in the know” to know where to find this fashion trove!
Equal Exchange came up with a creative way to meet the city’s java needs. They are using a bike to literally pedal caffeinated beverages on the Greenway this summer. Their “free-range cafe” is cute, compact, and totally mobile! Now you can stroll through the gorgeously landscaped park in the heart of downtown while sipping your coffee.
And further up the food chain from food trucks, there is The Truck Farm — a demonstration farm in the back of a truck. The guys who made the film King Corn started this organization with trucks in different cities across the country designed to teach people about where our food comes from.
Mobile vending is no longer just about hotdogs and tacos trucks or knives sold door-to-door. The swath of mobile businesses is wide and growing. From gourmet sandwiches and housemade drinks to trendy earrings and fresh produce it is exciting to see what will come next!
