The weather is warmer and the Bonmobile is gearing up for a busy week.  Highlights include serving our first dinner, spreading the Bon Me love outside of Boston, and joining all the awesome vendors at the SoWa Open Market.

Thursday June 2nd we will be in Jamaica Plain (JP) for First Thursday from 4:30 PM until 8 PM or so.  Our truck, along with some other trucks, will be parked at the Loring-Greenough House.  The address is 12 South Street but it is basically where Centre Street and South Street meet.

Saturday June 4th we’re going to be at the Fabulous Food Truck Festival at the Pinehills Village Green in Plymouth, MA from 11 AM until 7 PM.

Sunday June 5th we’re at the SoWa Open Market at 500 Harrison Street in Boston.  We’re serving there from 11 AM until 4 PM.

And of course, you can find us on City Hall Plaza Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM until 3 PM.

Getting to Know You: Kristen

Q: What is your favorite item on the Bon Me menu?

A: I’m with our customers on this one: the pork Bon Me double spice, our most popular menu item.  However I also really love noodle bowls with Vietnamese vinaigrette, which are filling but more refreshing.  Pork noodle bowls will probably sustain me this summer.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your job?

A:  The satisfaction of hearing how much people love the food.  Also seeing what Ali (the chef) comes up with for new sides and menu items.  I discovered I love congee, which I had never tasted before I worked here.

Q: Why did you decide to work for a food truck?

A: The food truck movement excites me and so when I learned it was taking off in Boston, I wanted to be involved.  First of all, food trucks are just fun and cheerful.  You strip away the fuss of restaurant dining, and have tasty, high-quality food handed to customers in the middle of their day. But also there’s opportunity for real food system innovation.  Of particular interest to me is the potential to be hyper-seasonal and connect diners with food producers in a concrete way.  When the farmers’ market starts up in City Hall Plaza, we might be serving veggies a stone’s throw away from a farmer who grew them.  I love that.

Q:  When you are not on the food truck what are you doing?

A:  Gardening, playing banjo, or reading cookbooks.

What we are working on at Bon Me

11 May

It’s been an exciting first month of business for us.  We really appreciate all the support everyone has given us, and we’re having a lot of fun learning the intricacies of serving amazing food from a truck.  As a business we are constantly striving to improve, so we’re going to put up a short series of blog posts looking at some of the cool things we’re working on:

Sourcing:

As of tomorrow morning, we’ll be using organic tofu.  Using high-quality ingredients is one of our primary goals, and we’ve decided that spending a bit more on our tofu will be well worth the investment.  As an added bonus, I think the new tofu is going to work better in our food as well.  Our current tofu has been a bit too soft, it gets a bit too moist and doesn’t work as well as we’d like with the sandwich.  This switch should be an upgrade all around, but let us know what you think!

We’re also looking at other ways we can improve our ingredients.  Hopefully we’ll have a big announcement shortly, but we’re still working out the details, and I don’t want to jump the gun.  Also as the growing season starts here, we’ll be working in as many local ingredients as we can.  You’ll see some great veggies in our noodle salads and we’ll have some amazing vegetable sides.

Coming Very Soon . . . Bon Me Breakfast

2 May

Chef Ali is at it again! This time it’s to come up with a breakfast menu. Starting Thursday May 5th Bon Me will be serving up hot, tasty, and satisfying breakfast options. On the starting line-up Ali has congee (a savory rice porridge) and a breakfast Bon Me sandwich made with eggs.

We also added hot coffee from Rao’s and tea from MEM Tea this week!

So stop by on Wednesday to give the Bon Me breakfast a try! We will be serving breakfast from 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.
